    iStat nano widget

I have a question; I run istat nano widget, but have never gotten the temperature readout to work (everything else works fine). Is there something I need to do/can do to get it to register, or does this mean something is messed up on my computer?

OK, this is getting a bit..... I take back what I said earlier in the thread about CoreDuoTemp matching FanControl's temp readings.

FanControl says 55C, CoreDuoTemp says 37C. Firmware is 1.1.

Does anyone really know what the two are _actually_ measuring? I mean, the differential makes sense if, for example, CoreDuoTemp is measuring the chips temperature, while FanControl is measuring the heatsink.... but does anyone have hard facts what's actually being measured??? :(

Is there a technical document that shows which sensors are installed in the MB? I can't find any, but maybe someone else has a clue.

I just barely got my first speedlight a few weeks ago. So I can point it up and put it just low enough to trigger the strobes?

I'd say it's time for some experimentation!

iTunes puts Music Videos in with music. You can change that, select your file, hit command I and select the video tab. If you want it to show up under Movies or TV, just change it in the menu that appears.

Thank you for the clarification, however when I do command-i and choose "Video", the pull-down menu is greyed out. I tried this with several videos, and it's the same: I am unable to change video type on my music videos downloaded from the iTunes Store (American Idiot, etc.). They were all downloaded well before today's updates, so I don't know if that's the problem or not (maybe ones bought afterwards will not cause this problem?)

Are other people experiencing the same problem?

My mom got her iphone last year. She loves it so much she's been totally into apple stuff (bought herself an ipod touch when it came out - don't ask me when she already has an iphone - and even bought me the new nano).

She says she's probably going to buy a Mac next time (and she used to snub the mac when I was a kid).I beleive this is how it started for a lot of current apple customers. For me it started with the iPhone in 2007. After that I have been hooked; iMacs, MBP's, iPhones, iPods, and iPads. I've even got my family buying all apple products. They see what great expierience I'm having and they want in. All it takes is one good expeirience. Then starts a chain reaction, then starts growth.

What Adobe is saying is the simple truth: They can't provide Flash due to Apple's app restrictions. If that's "pointing the finger," it's pointing it accurately.

Whether it is good or bad that Apple has those restrictions is a separate debate, but Adobe is just explaining to users who might want Flash on the iPhone why it isn't available, something that MR readers probably already know but that a lot of iPhone users may not.

The reality is if you really need a Optical drive, that need can be easily taken care of with a USB device. When needed, it isn't something to carry around with your self constantly.
Is the bandwith of Bluetooth less than a CD or DVD reader?

It would be cool to have a bluetooth CD/DVD reader. If that worked it be so tight. No wires. And you could stack them and create a laptop with 5 optical drives. :p

Anyone watching Studio 60 on NBC tonight, Matthew Perry was using an aluminum 12" or 13" MacBook Pro. You could tell that it was a MacBook Pro and not a G4 because there was an iSight built in to the lid right above the screen. If you Tivo'd it, check it out! it was approximately 20 minutes in to the show.

He usually uses a black Macbook. I'm sure it was just shot at a strange angle to make it appear aluminum.

I would love a laptop without an optical drive.

I hardly ever use mine on my 15'' PB, I'd love to be able to replace it with a battery or second hard drive or just leave the bay empty to reduce weight.

PC world sells USB floppy drives, USB CD and USB DVD drives for a few tenners each. I'd be perfectly happy to buy one and leave it in the drawer for when I need it.

PS - Bluetooth DVD drive? don't think so, big hunks of rotating media need either big expensive batteries or to be plugged into the mains electricity.

Would like to see someone try it on the market tho...

In addition to my promise to run around naked and post the video to the Internet if iMac gets Conroe, I will do the same if they introduce a phone at WWDC.

    Not happening.

Not that I want to see you naked or anything, but I really want a Conroe iMac. Been putting off the intel iMacs for 8 months waiting for this update.

Top Secret stuff? You mean like a movie download service? Or a Front Row PVR? iPhone software?

I find it interesting that he didn't say anything about Front Row and how it would be improved.

I was thinking about that just now as I watched the Keynote. Many of the features demonstrated today seem to have been specifically mentioned because of their importance to developers. They're either new or improved resources for the devs to work with, or they are "quality of life" improvements. Notice that a lot of items on developer/advanced user wish lists were granted today -- multi-user iCal, multiple iChat enhancements for teleconferencing and so forth, multiple desktops, various organization-related advances in Mail, automated backups (what developer wouldn't want that?), and so forth. This is definitely "Developers! Developers! Developers!" type stuff. Some of the biggest complaints (valid or not) are centered around the lack of various programs for OS X. This is a big gambit, and we should be looking at it in terms of its potential, not of its explicit results to Apple's product line. This WWDC was very strategic in nature -- Apple's going for the throat.

The top secret features? I expect that the mention was made largely to allay Apple fanboy fears of a underwhelming OS update, to keep Microsoft nervous, and to keep developers on their toes as well. That being said, I think there's a large grain of truth in it. As previously-mentioned, a good number of the improvements mentioned today were at least debatably for power users (not the Mail stationery, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection somewhere).

The features that sell us on Leopard (and convince stragglers and non Mac-users to buy new Macs) are going to be impressive in function and not have much bearing on developers (at least, not like the Intel switch ;)). I mean enhancements to Front Row, iTunes, Quicktime (Just give us the @#$%ing Pro features), and other media-centered technologies. Enhancements to Safari, Finder (I hope), iCal, Address Book. Enhancements to consumer hardware, like the Airport base stations and (possibly) a TV-capture device.

In other words, I think Apple's flanking their competitors in the media center world and are preparing to do with video what they've done with audio. They might even attempt to crush Microsoft right around the Vista launch, when consumer confidence is at a low, by making their OS's entire software library just another feature of OS X.

Now, this probably isn't so. Apple might be resting on their Tiger laurels. But I think, after careful consideration, that Apple is going for the throat.

This is complete bullcrap, people. Over the air updates will come, but over WiFi. Doing this over 3G makes no sense.

DROIDs already do all updates over 3G and VZW likes it that way.
So if VZW is involved they will opt for updates over 3G
This may mean that VZW will be keeping unlimited data on the iphone, and may have changed their minds about ending unlimited data when it comes to the iphone. I think VZW has noticed that having unlimited data makes them more attractive when competing against ATT+T-mobile merger super company.

I'd be fine with waiting till fall to upgrade my 3GS if it meant LTE. Yes, I know the tech is nascent but the timing would seriously suck for entering a 2 year contract on a phone without it. That's the main problem. I don't want to have to wait till 2013 or upgrade after just one year (and there's no guarantee either carrier would allow it).

    As for 'professionals' getting pissy:

I don't think any of them care too much about the new features as much as they care about the speed updates. That's the biggest benefit for them.
The 'quick' editing features are useful for some 'pro' edits, definitely useful for a pro-sumer.

My best friend is an editor in a production house in Hollywood and his concern was that they didn't talk about tape workflow, video in/out cards, 3rd party support or XML-based export - among other things.

Just the concern is that they re-built the app and added a lot of GUI and 'smart' features but they didn't say anything about the dirty nuts & bolts.

So - it's an area of concern.

If Apple did what they did with iMove - re-built it from the ground up and removed features (most of which were re-added in the next version)
Well that would be a concern as the 'new' version wouldn't have support for their existing workflows.
(not workflows like "we like to do things this way" more workflows like "because of how this was shot or because we need to export to this specific tape deck" workflows that you can't really mess with)

It's mundane stuff to 'fans' and 'prosumers' but critical for higher end production houses.

A lot of people (me included) were pretty annoyed when Quicktime X came out with fewer features than QT7 . . .

As for the other reason editors might be grumpy:

Some of their 'work' will be partially replaced by smart features.
So they might worry that their exec sees this and gets rid of their assistant because "the software can do it!" which isn't necessarily the case.

Professionals get grumpy when all of a sudden software allows people to do things that used to be their 'trick' exclusively.
Old designers complain about Creative Suite, photographers complain about Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture, music producers complain about Pro Tools and now editors will complain about Final Cut.

Speaking of Quicktime 7 - know anything that adds those features back?
