May I be the first to say: Where's our desktop?
If you're referring to a Mac Pro, I know that mine shipped last night from CA and is currently in East Boston. Should be here this afternoon and then I can finally connect up my 30" ACD.

You're right, it wasn't the RIAA handing the fines, of course, it was courts. But you're wrong, there most certainly have been fines:
    http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/06/riaa-jury-slaps-2-million-fine-on-jammie-thomas/
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/112436/industry_group_pays_childs_riaa_fine.html

Those aren't fines, they're damage awards by juries. Shody reporting and misuse of the word fine.

Looks like nothing has changed but the processor. Gentlemen, commence your bitching.

    You got that right. lol
However, due to the almost lack of changes in the MBP, why would the MB get any serious changes other than processor and memory bumps?

So this fall, we can expect from Apple...

A 1920x1440 Retina Display iPad 3 (to be released in September)

    An A5 powered iPod

    and an...

A5 powered iPhone 5 with a 4" screen, 4g, better voice controls, cloud storage and drag and drop support.

Basically, every single thing on this list is about to come true...

I could live with that. Apple is going to DOMINATE this Christmas. :)

New nanos are absolutely gorgeous! While I am not in the market for one, I think they are a great improvement. I am tempted to get a cheap 2 gig one, but eh...I will save my duckets. I wish the shuffles shipped... I would get my bro one for his bday.:(

I don't get the the whole 3D think. Technology isn't mature yet and current 3D movies are really bad. Hope it's just a rumour. Retina display should be next, not 3D.

"What?? They released them already?? But I just bought...GAH!!!!!"- C.M.Sevilla

I AM SO CLOSE TO THAT LINE!!!!

In fact I just called the store and said to them; "Uh, what's wrong with this picture, I paid more for an outdated Macbook and I still haven't received it"...

So he said that he'll cancel the original order and place a new one.

See, I even added an extra 512MB RAM to the original order cause I had to have it with at least 1GB of ram. Glad to see it is now included in the in-store versions.

But it was terribly close, cause they promised me the MacBook for this week and since it still didn't show up, I was getting suspicious. I guess I was right, they did release new MacBooks. I just didn't expect it...

In any event, all is well, and they will reorder the MacBook with Core2Duo and it might take longer but I'll save some money and I'll get a better machine that is BRAND new...

So that's my story to share on a "How close were you to buy an old mac Today" story...

Have fun guys... and if I get it soon, I'll let you know just how well it performs and if Rosetta is still a drag... "it probably is..." but at least I'll be able to use Aperture without a problem on it...

    :) :D

When you study harmony, who are you going to study the most? Bach
When you study Music History of the Baroque era, who is going to take the biggest part of the semester? Bach.
When you study Harpsichord or organ, who is the biggest composer you are going to study? Bach. Even when you do piano, you are going to study Bach at leas at the beginning before your Liszt and Rachmaninoff.

I know they teach popular music at universities. The course on popular is music is optional. My wife took a course on popular music at Montreal university. They studied the Beatles for about 20 minutes of the whole semester. I did my bachelor's in the USA, my master's in Paris, DEM in Paris and my doctorate at Montreal. I know 20 is minutes is the most the Beatles are going to get. That's how important they are to music history. Perhaps, they are important in popular music.

You think you know about music, but your knowledge is very limited. It is just plain ridiculous to compare them to Bach.

I never said nobody studies Bach when studying music. Of course they do. Even The Beatles did. But you were implying that no one studies The Beatles period, which just isn't true. And as a side note, there is no way to study Music History of the Baroque era in relation to The Beatles considering they weren't alive in the Baroque era. :)

And aren't you just a bit arrogant to assume to know my musical background? Please come off your high horse. You may not like The Beatles but to say they contribute/contributed nothing to music is ridiculous.

I think if you asked most of the population, the vast majority would find it 100% reasonable and appropriate that any retail company, in any business sector, decides what they will or won't sell in their store - be it WalMart, The Gap, Starbucks, or your local corner grocery store. Apples retail store is just that... a retail store --- and the norms of business retail don't go away, to be replaced by a magical la-la land where people get to do whatever they want.

In your case though, companies have alternatives to get their product out. The App store is virtually a monopoly. So, a company could spend months developing an app and have it rejected for any reason. Then, they would have no alternative to make the development cost back.

We were affected by the Three20 project rejections also. It cause a delay for us which in turn caused a delay to a client. They weren't too happy about it. That said, we tell all clients that we do not control Apple's process and the risk of delays is there.

It is frustrating and hopefully they make a change soon to alleviate some of these problems.

My daughter needs to use a Mac for school work, but I simply cannot justify the $1k plus expense for a bottom of the line Mac Book.

I used to think the same way. 2 kids off to college, money is tight but I gave them each their choice of laptops:

1.) kid#1 chose a Dell because she <gasp> liked Vista
2.) kid#2 chose the plain old white macbook

3 years later, guess which one is currently crap? Seriously, Kid#1 comes home one day, opens up her Dell and she's got 3 keys missing one of which is the Enter key - has no clue where they went. :D Also, the battery is lasting a full 20 minutes and the DVD drive is kaput. The damn thing creaks and moans more than my arthritic joints.

Now, the lowly white macbook looks like it's been used as a door mat (which I polished up for kid #2 in about 5 minutes) but it works flawlessly.

Really... don't rationalize the cost. Kids are tough on these things and you aren't always there to "learn 'em" how to handle them. A well built mac + Applecare is a pretty secure future for their learning experience.

I'm curious. Anybody know where all that money goes? How much does Apple (the computer company) get vs. music companies vs. the two remaining Beatles? I heard that Michael Jackson owned the rights to a lot of Beatles songs - and now he's gone too. Any place this can be looked at?

It's normally a silvery/metal color isn't it? - yet it's highlighted orange on the banner... I did a quick Google search and the only other image I could find featuring a similar orange icon is this one:

    http://www.bergie.iki.fi/midcom-serveattachmentguid-98144d9ca390f9ff849b5747d4621ef9/dangerous-isync-merge.jpg

I've never really used iSync though, so don't know what all this means or whether there are actually orange versions of the icon found within the app. Anyone care to shed any light?

So after spending maybe as much as 8k before the member of staff has even started and you've bought their software, to be able to pay 85/m for the software instead of 1700 in one hit is a much needed relief.
Interesting point, although what you're not factoring in is that the resale value of CS5 is substantial whereas the resale value of the subscription model is ZERO :D

    Agreed. Recipe for sucess:

    Click.
    Enter credit card information.
    Get on with life.
Sign for package when it arrives in about three weeks.
    Enjoy your new device.

The delays were actually a good thing for me. Gave me time to "cool off"
I'm with you on every point, except the cooling off period.

Now that Apple's quality control had tanked, I know that there's a great likelihood ill get a bad one and the return game will begin.

Even though I have an Apple store nearby, I buy BTO, so I'm stuck with what has become "The Crap Shoot, Gambling The Apple Way".

Bigger screen is not an improved spec.

If it's done within the same unit dimensions or slightly (a few millimeters) larger, then yes it is an improved spec.

In a 3.5" screen is somewhat of a drawback for high end devices that are expected to do everything. Power draw on screens and chips is reduced, the technology exists to keep thin form factors and battery life while scaling up to 3.7 and 4" screens. Just swapping between a Nexus One's 3.7" and Nexus S' 4.0" makes a noticeable difference. Scaling 960x640 up to 4" isn't going to ruin the "zomg retina" that every apple fanatic screams about. It'll still put it ahead of all the competition's 800x480 4" screens.

When the interface on a device is handled solely through touch input on the screen itself, 4" screens have a significant advantage over 3.5" screens. After using a Nexus S, Galaxy S, HTC HD2, etc. I think the sweet spot is 4". 4.3" and the unit dimensions start getting too big. But 4" provides just enough extra screen real estate to make typing more comfortable and information display easier to read. Not to mention with Apple pushing gaming on its IOS devices, onscreen joysticks would be made quite a bit easier with a little added space.

And the point is that the current Iphone dimensions don't need to change to accommodate a larger screen. Just lessen the bezel width and you can put a larger screen in the current sized handset without issue. Or scale the dimensions up a few millimeters. Either way it's win-win.

If they increase the amount of RAM to 1GB they could increase the amount the integrated graphics use to around 128mb, the current 64mb is a bit low.
The 64 MB quoted for the GMA950 is actually a "sliding window". It can (and often does) request a larger chunk of video RAM from the memory controller as required. Out of that chunk, the GMA950 slides around its 64 MB window to adjust which areas of memory it can directly manipulate at any given time.

(According to Apple's website, simply booting MacOS X on a MacBook or Mac Mini causes the graphics system to commandeer approximately 80 MB of RAM.)

    __________
BTW, that's the reason why computers running the GMA950 chipset will be able to run Windows Vista using the new Aero interface, despite the fact
that systems with dedicated video RAM of less than 128 MB will have to use the Classic (Windows 95/98) interface.

So explain the 920,000 workers FoxConn employs.

Clearly, something in manufacturing gadgets and electronics, which is FoxConn's primary business, requires a lot of labor or else they wouldn't be employing close to a million people!
Like you, I'm not familiar with the details of their business model. Some of what they manufacture might be labor intensive, and some of it might be built on a robotic assembly line. Trying to figure this out from that Wikipedia article will be nothing but speculation.

    YouTube uses Flash and H.264.

Look... All I know is, if a HUGE, INTERNATIONAL company like Apple can pull off their website without it which gets millions and millions of hits every day and is very well designed and media rich, there is no excuse!

Actually, Apple wants websites to use open standards such as HTML, which is not Apples software. Flash is proprietary and is certainly not a free market. You should cut down on the caffeine.

    is QuickTime an open standard?
