The only thing I don't like about my 12" PB is that the screen is not very bright. It's nearly unusable even in shade. Speakers could also use a boost. The MB screen is so nice! You new buyers have it so good. :)

It is a different issue. That relates to repeating the tone after a couple of minutes if the user hasn't read the message. The "bug" we are referring to is that the SMS vibrate alert has gone from a continuous pulse to a "double-click" style. It is a positive for some, but for me it's a negative. Seems to be louder, and more obtrusive. Hard to describe.

    You're right. Post updated.

First off, to all the Flash haters, you guys are the myopic people that prevent real progress. Sure there are a lot of bad flash webpages, but there is plenty of content out there, games, video, and more that runs on Flash and you don't know it. Video is the king, and for some reason Apple doesn't want you viewing video apart from what they sell you. It's all about the $$$. Want proof? Apple added their own Flash player that only works with Utube. They had to do that or they would have been killed in the press, but still they have their own custom flash player for UTube video, but block all else.

Again, it's all about the $$$. They want to SELL you video, they don't want you getting it for free, or worse yet, buying it from someone else.

It's all part of Apple's arrogance. Now I love my MacPro, but I'm forced to buy Dell monitors because Apple keeps changing the connectors. The latest Apple 24" monitor has a cable that's too short, and an adapter that requires you to buy a new video card, or a new laptop. Get real Apple. You are going to chase people away.

But Apple's server is getting hammered right now... I got through to print out the affected serial numbers, then powered down my AlBook, just to be safe, popped out the battery to see if I had a lucky number, and now that I know I do, I can't get back onto the site.

Oh well. I'll try again later.

One thing I wonder about is what the consequences of keeping the 'dangerous' battery as a back-up would be... I'm not really worried about it exploding, but will the Apple police come after me for not returning the old battery once they ship me a new one? Obviously, it would be my own fault if my laptop exploded when using the old battery, but I'm willing to take that risk.

    Cheers

Interesting question... You need to prove in some way you indeed had that defective battery

you could have apple set it up at the store when you buy it... then you can download music and apps on device, so really the only reason one would need to connect to a computer is to create a backup or update the OS... still isn't a real computer imo but you definitely don't need a computer to use an iPad. I bought one for my grandma and she uses it as her only computer, so depending on ones needs, yes it can replace an actual computer, for others, not so much.

But backups and updates are critical for such a device. That is my whole point... Are you arguing that it does not need ota syncing or just arguing? Obviously its serviceable without tethering, but you do need to sync it to a computer for it to work. Thats like if I had to plug my scooter into my car just to get it going. It makes it a luxury and not a necessity. They would sell more by making it stand on its own. Even if it required a wifi connection to do updates and sync. They would sell even more than they already do.

A good photographer can take brilliant photographs with a disposible camera, a bad photographer will still take rubbish photographs with a top end DSLR. :)

+1. I'm not saying this is a great picture (especially since the pool vacuum is in it) but I was pretty impressed with the iPhone 4s camera. This was straight out of the phone, no editing. (I wish this was my house but it was part of the mansion my sister had her wedding at).

I hope if Apple indeed does give 8MP they also make sure the photosites are enlarged and the lens is a higher quality.

I have to descent from the mass and say I was not impressed by the Keynote. What the hell is with Safari still having the brushed metal interface, as well as the finder, etc...

I thought they were finally going to get rid of that and get some consistency in their GUI.

you mean dissent. great feature of OS X, hover over a word and hit control-command-D and you get a pop-up dictionary element defining the word.

as for the UI, that's the easiest thing in the world to implement at the last minute. it would be dumb from a marketing stand point to release that now 9 months or so prior to leopard's release. right now microsoft has caught up in many ways to the aqua look and feel (okay will catch up), while i don't think microsoft has the kind of time to implement GUI ideas in to vista, the general public are easily distracted. release the GUI now then tell them not for 9 months and they're going to get bored with it. when leopard ships the GUI will have a "been there, done that" feel about it. now announce it at MWSF '07 and tell everyone you're shipping in april, now you're on. you scuttle vista by showing off a UI that is different, and hopefully superior to vista's rip off of aqua and you have a better chance of maintaining interest.

i saw some hints to this effect when the french gentleman was poking fun at vista.

Overall, I am much more interested in the developers. When is OS X going to be more than a different OS and get some key native applications? Apple continues to lead the show, as they should, but they should take a hint from Microsoft and promote their developers more. Like it or not, it's not Apple, but ultimately their developers that will grow the platform.

what do you mean by "native"? all OS X apps not running in classic or rosetta are native. photoshop is never going to have OS X exclusive features, it's never going to feel like an application from the omni group because it has to work cross platform.

as for developers, things like core audio, core video, core data, etc... are huge.

Sad part is, as adoption increases...so will viruses/malware/trojans/etc.

    Best analogy Ive heard is:

Windows 7 is a house with bars on the windows, and industrial locks on the doors...in Baltimore.

OSX is a house with no locks, in the middle of nowhere.

You haven't been to Baltimore lately!
Middle of Nowhere is just south of the interstate and is beautiful.

News flash, Macs are popular and plentiful and still have no Viruses.
Don't you worry about the future. It will get here and it will be fine.

Windows users, be afraid, be very afraid.

Surely Apple can't combine everything into something like (this) Or can they?

...Everything from 100% full screen to virtual keys, to selecting different modalities depending on orientation(!), to sensitivity to force of touch, to squeezing, to miniDVD drive, to ....

the exciting part is how do-able this seems to be. My Treo has a touch sensitive screen. The whole screen can view photos. Or, depending on which other mode you're in--phone dialing? contact search?--a touch on a part of the screen might dial a "2" or select a single contact and display its data; squeezing's already incorporated into the mighty mouse; some of the other features, like different responses depending upon how many fingers touch the screen, already operate on the MBP and MB touchpads, and the linking of different modes (a la phone and contact/pda are already linked on my Treo. Etc., etc.

In fact, maybe the question might be how different the apple patent is from what the Treo does: The treo screen displays icons that can be selected by touch to select a contact manager, or a phone mode, or picture viewer, or web browser, etc., and in each of those modes the various sections of the screen display touch-sensitive choices unique to that mode.

At any rate, I don't know if this multi-featured device is the subject of apple's sept 12 announcement. But i think apple has the potential to incorporate the features of this patent into hugely significant new device(s). The applications are all too obvious. I hope they do. Steve Jobs has always seemed disinclined to offer any product that's just a lot like existing hardware, thus the lack of an iPhone. The ability to incorporate phone and music player and video viewer and....(?) create the opportunity for apple to again be a pioneer--to introduce to us products we didn't realize we wanted, or that do things others had done but in dramatically better ways--as he did with the iPod.

Store still down? Annoying or what?Yes very annoying! I'm trying to figure out the specs/prices for these. Btw, does anybody think the Apple would allow me to swap the MBs at Admore rather than going back to Christiana Mall in Delaware?

    Sounds very revolutionary to me.

hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?

    uhhh, yes!

    LOL...

I think the Classic will be discountinued. Apple is moving the music and video experience to the cloud to allow your collection to be shared between iTV, iPad, and iPhone devices. The acquisition of the music upload service lula has to be nearing some level of integration with iTunes and Mobile Me.

I bet the only thing keeping this strategy from being fully executed are legal agreements between the content providers and Apple. Something tells me this could be a long fight as it seems that content providers are making inroads in iTune competitors like eMusic. Prices are increasing at eMusic and becoming more 'fixed' across record labels with a larger share of the value-add shifting back to the labels. It's almost as if they've finally found a business model that brings them back to the hay-days of the vinyl record era.

For me to be a consumer in this space I would need an ability to upload my current collection to the cloud. Most of what I buy isn't available on iTunes and a large percentage is either out of print or has not been made available digitally.

I'm afraid I'll always have a 4 iPod Classic strategy to hold my collection. That will be my strategy until the batteries no longer hold a charge.

I'd rather read normal book. Screens will make your eyes cry.

This is why the content is crucial.

Since April, I have been offering downloadable text-based content for all iPods, (apart from the Shuffle and early models), from my web site.

These are mainly guides that people traveling from place to place would find useful - although I've also got sports guides such as a Wimbledon Tennis guide (which took me ages to create) also available for free download.

I call these Pod SnapShots rather than eBooks because that's what they are - a snapshot of a particular subject that you can flick through quickly to get the information that you need - be that airport guides, store guides, etc.

These are ideally suited to iPods screen size and resolution - any document bigger/longer than that needs a much better screen IMHO - so if these rumors are true it's possible that this new iPod device may be a completely new model focused on documents.

While everyone is focusing on Apple opening a Music Store - they may well be about to pull a fast one and open a Book Store instead! This would be *much* easier technically to implement! ;)

Honestly, most musicians don't study the Beatles as individuals - nor do they need to - because they were just solid musicians, nothing spectacular. When you had Clapton, Beck, and even Townshend, there is no need to study Lennon or Harrison. When you had Entwistle ... no need for McCartney.
Even though Clapton, Beck, Townshend, and Entwistle left some pretty big footsteps, every one of them would admit they themselves followed in some pretty big footsteps as well.

And, from a slightly different angle, Les Paul as well as the Beatles/EMI made huge strides in recording techniques that are still the foundations today for what is now commonly done in Pro Tools. Whether or not you like Les Paul or the Beatles, that's still true.

Pioneers are still the pioneers; the greats always stand on the shoulders of the greats that came before them, it's how it works. All are made up from parts of the work of those who came before. The "greatest rock and roll band in the world" never becomes that without Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry; but you don't even have to be a fan of those guys to like what the Stones built from those influences. Or what will be made from musicians who have the Stones as one of their influences.

... and that putting aside the fact that in the mid 60's the level of musicianship exhibited by even average jazz players was far above anything rock players seen as 'innovators' were doing ...
It's an unfortunate fact that their level of musicianship and talent may have no bearing on their success or their the ability to influence modern music. The world is full of technically proficient musicians playing music nobody wants to listen to. Sad, yes, but there it is.
